Data saturation means you’ve collected enough data when additional data no longer bring new themes, insights, or understandings. In qualitative work, you study patterns by analyzing data as you go, and you look for repetition and redundancy across interviews, observations, or documents. When you notice that new data are just repeating what you’ve already found, you’ve likely reached saturation. This is what guides sampling: you continue sampling and analyzing iteratively until you reach that point, then you stop, knowing you’ve captured the range of experiences or perspectives relevant to the study.

It isn’t about hitting a fixed quota or performing a power calculation, which are quantitative ideas. It isn’t about identifying every possible theme—saturation often occurs before exhaustively mapping every micro-theme. And it isn’t about researchers getting tired or staffing; it’s about the informational yield and the point at which adding more data stops yielding new insights. If you’ve still got new angles or divergent cases after adding more data, you keep sampling; once those new angles stop appearing, saturation has been reached.
